What Is a Chemical Peel Used For?

When you want to look youthful once again, chemical peels in Trinity, and New Port Richey, FL, can help. At Trinity Dermatology and Aesthetic Centre and Richey Medical Center, our board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Brian Johnson, offers this skin treatment to help reduce the signs of aging.

What Can a Chemical Peel Do?

A chemical peel can be done on the face, hands, or neck. They have successfully helped treat many skin conditions, including:

  • Acne
  • Age spots
  • Dullness
  • Freckles
  • Melasma
  • Scars
  • Sun damage

Who is a Good Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

During a consultation to discuss chemical peels at Trinity Dermatology Centre in Trinity, and New Port Richey, FL, we will discuss your skin issues and treatment goals to determine if this treatment is right for you. Usually, the best candidates are fair-skinned and light-haired patients. For those with darker skin, you can still achieve good results, depending on the reason why you want to be treated. Bulges or severe wrinkles don’t respond well to a chemical peel and may require a more cosmetic procedure such as laser resurfacing or filler.

What Happens During a Chemical Peel?

Your chemical peel starts with a thorough cleanse of your skin. Next, a chemical solution such as glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acid, is applied to small areas of your skin. This creates a controlled wound that allows new skin to resurface. During your chemical peel, you may feel a burning sensation for up to ten minutes. A stinging sensation may set in after this initial burning. Cool compresses will help ease this discomfort.

After your chemical peel, you will experience peeling and scaling for three to seven days. Recovery time depends on the depth of your peel with Dr. Johnson. You must avoid the sun for several months after your chemical peel to protect your new skin.
