Why is My Acne Worse in the Summer Time?

Why is My Acne Worse in the SummerTime?

The Tampa Bay area is well known for its beautiful beaches and warm, sunny weather. Many natives enjoy the year-round tropical climate. However, during the summer months, temperature and humidity levels spike, leading to bothersome skin issues, such as acne. Acne can be caused by many different factors, such as hormone fluctuations and genetics. However, it is likely that if you are already prone to acne, it is exacerbated during the summer months. This is due to high temperature, humidity, and sun exposure.

Skin naturally produces sebum, which is an oily, waxy substance the body makes to coat, protect, and moisturize the skin. During the summer months, heat and humidity rise, leading to pores overproducing sebum and sweat. When excess sebum and sweat build up on the skin, it can lead to acne. Be sure to blot sweaty skin with a clean towel, being careful not to smear to prevent spreading bacteria. Splashing your face with cool water can also help. Since we tend to spend more time outdoors and in the sun during summer months, sun exposure can lead to the top layer of the skin to dry out, thus causing the skin to over produce sebum as a way to compensate. Acne is formed when excess sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria mix together and clog the opening of a pore. Between the excessive heat, humidity, sweat, and sun exposure, it is no surprise that the summer months increase conditions for acne much more than any other season.

Switching your skin care products for the summer months, along with monthly facials, can help to combat this common skin condition. Professional facials allow for deep cleansing and detoxification of the pores. Home care products like gel-based cleansers and water-based moisturizers are also recommended. Look for makeup that is “non-comedogenic” (meaning it won’t clog your pores) or consider not wearing makeup at all. Always consult your local skin care professional for the most accurate product recommendations for your skin type.
